“I just got promoted! I now have the scope and trust that I always wanted at work.” My client Max told me in the last coaching session.
I had a flashback –
I’ve known Max way before he became my client.
He’s an empathetic leader, a reliable contributor and a creative person.
I’ve seen his work and the impact he generated. He is no doubt a top performer!
However, when we started the coaching relationship last May, he needed to rebuild himself to get the impact, trust and autonomy he wanted in a new company.
We’ve all been there – starting a new job, stepping into a new role, transitioning into a new career, switching to a new industry or wanting to have a better lifestyle.
These desires and changes require us to examine our old identity and transcend into a new one where we are more empowered and congruent in the new role/job/environment.
Just like the best athletes, Max hired me as his coach, mentor and trusted advisor to help him reach and maintain peak performance.
Getting a promotion became an inevitable outcome as we started working together.
The best part is – he’s getting SO MUCH MORE than a promotion in the past 1.5 years.
Rebuild Trust
Being a top performer and people pleaser like so many of my clients, it’s hard for Max not to be everywhere for everyone. Adding perfectionism on top of it, he felt always behind with constant exhaustion. The worst was he didn’t trust himself to finish what he set out to do anymore. He’s afraid of making bold promises and under-delivering in the end.
Sound familiar?
We’ve worked together on rebuilding his self-trust week after week:
- To have clarity on what’s truly important to him.
- To make a small commitment and keep it.
- To have the courage to renegotiate his commitment if it doesn’t feel aligned anymore.
- To have a burning YES to empower him to say NOs.
- To celebrate the small and big wins!
More Energy
- We shift the thoughts and attitudes around work from “have to” to “need to” to “want to”. (maybe I’ll write a post later 😉)
- He has tools to help him understand what fills and drains his energy so he can make conscious choices to increase his energy.
- We see everything as opportunities to grow.
- We tap into his WHYs and emotions to stay motivated.
Be An Inspiring Leader
- Regardless of the ups and downs, he keeps focusing on what he can create.
- He has the courage to be transparent and vulnerable when unexpected things happen.
- He makes high-level decisions while giving others space with less ego.
We’ve worked through tactics to see quick results.
We’ve built new habits to create momentum.
We’ve experiment strategies toward longer-term goals.
We’ve coached around mindset and removed blockers to know the best next action to do.
We’ve shifted who he is (his identity) to create the results he wants.
Yet, what I’m most proud of and what I’m celebrating with this post – is one of his remarks in a coaching session a while ago:
“I’m progressively happier”
I would argue behind goals like promotion, work-life balance, new house, visibility, a thriving business, what we all really really really want is HAPPINESS!
Love,
Wen
P.S.

- Max not only got the promotion, but he also created a journalling app, Time Thief, at his spare time to fulfill his creative endeavor. Check it out here.
