Who Would You Be Without The Story?

Few days ago, one of my past clients reached out asking if he could share my contact with his coworkers.

I was surprised by his request.

You see. Our coaching partnership lasted for a few months. He didn’t continue afterwards. He didn’t write me a testimonial.

In my mind, I interpreted these stories as evidence that “the coaching experience is not powerful enough. He is just too polite to say it.”

Until the message landed in my inbox, I learned he has spoken to many of his coworkers on the impact of coaching with me. He said coaching with me was one of the most beneficial things he has done for his career and personal life.

I was blown away.

First, by how appreciated he is and the impact our work has created. I have no idea! I am so touched by his openness to share his experience with his coworkers.

Second, I’m amazed by how my mind just made up stories that are NOT true at all.

Then, I see the pattern everywhere.

  • Someone doesn’t return my message.
  • Someone doesn’t show up for a call.
  • No one has signed up for my group coaching program yet.
  • A potential client hasn’t paid me after saying yes.
  • Or even, my partner turns her back on me.

My mind creates stories and assigns meanings to all these things. I take every small event personally thinking there must be something wrong with me.

Sound familiar?

Our mind likes to create stories so everything makes sense. So we can be at peace with logical reasons.

Yet, time and time again, I am humbled by the reality.

The reality is everyone has different ways of expression, at different phases in life, and in different frames of mind.

Who am I to make it ALL about myself.

When I learn I create impact, that’s awesome!

When I am unsure if I make a difference, that’s good too.

I get to stay curious and ask questions without making assumptions.

Without my stories, I stay present with what really is and continue to move forward.

How might you be aware of and question your stories?

Love,
Wen
