I’ve been following the war in Ukraine closely in the past week.
When the invasion started, I was on vacation in Maui. The war just seemed so far away while I was doing yoga by the beach.
As an individual, my first thought was, “Oh well, what can I do to be impactful, I’m just one person.” Although I feel the pain of raising gas prices, my life is still very blissful. I feel guilty to be in such a fortunate position. I know many people share this sentiment.
As a Taiwanese, the invasion of Ukraine has a special meaning. Similar to Ukraine, for so many years, Taiwan has been under the threat of China, including daily incursions and military exercise simulating attacks. After the Ukraine invasion, a catch phrase emerged: “Today Ukraine, Tomorrow Taiwan.” When I think about the potential attack happening to Taiwan, I shiver. My entire family lives in Taiwan. I can’t imagine them becoming refugees or worrying about them dying in a war.
Yet, my deepest fear for Taiwan IS the reality for Ukrainians. The price is too big to not take any action.
When I think about what I can do as a person, the first thing is to understand. I learn the current situation, I learn the history, and I also learn the power of humanity. For many, it’s a gift to be deeply listened to and to be understood. I know this is the least I can do. After this, I took more small steps:
- I forgave myself for being ignorant and taking actions slowly.
- Inspired by my coach Rich, I donated money to a trusted source knowing my donation has been quadruple matched to expand my impact.
- I coached my Ukrainian client to not avoid her emotions and to rebuild the relationship with herself, her family, and her country in this difficult time.
- I’m offering free coaching sessions to Ukrainians in need.
I continue to look for small ways to create the ripple effect, including writing this post.
I believe there is a lot one person can do to create the world they want to live in.
I believe humanity will win.
I believe the best act to take care of others is to take care of ourselves first, even if that means taking a break from the news.
Love,
Wen
P.S. If you know any Ukrainians who can benefit from a coaching session with me, please have them book a time me directly.
