Your Words Create Your World: Are You Seeing Reality?

During a recent coaching session, my client took a deep breath and said, “Now I’m getting into the scary part. This is where I usually falter.”

He’s made remarkable strides, but as he stood on the brink of sharing his project with the world, the upcoming steps felt intimidating. Questions like “Who do I reach out to?” and “What if they aren’t interested in my app?” played on his mind.

It struck me then: he was viewing his journey through a lens distorted by his own words as if he had put on a virtual reality goggle programming his next steps to appear daunting and filled with challenges.

This idea isn’t new to any of us. Our words have a way of molding our perspective, creating our own personal world. Your words indeed shape your reality.

And, honestly, haven’t we all worn those goggles at some point?

Though it’s tempting to protect ourselves from potential embarrassments or setbacks, deep within, there’s an unyielding drive to grow, to influence, to create.

That’s the essence of being alive.

So, the key? Take off those goggles and see the world for what really IS.

For my client:

  • Venturing into the unknown? Cool. It’s guaranteed not to be boring. 😉
  • No immediate buzz around his product? Sure! It’s an opportunity to gather feedback from close connections.
  • Concerns about the product’s appeal? Instead of assuming disinterest, why not ask: “What would you want in it?”

Often, when we swap out our self-limiting narratives and take the very next action, reality often turns out to be kinder than our projections.

How about you?

What have your experience been?

Love, Wen
